Abstract

There are more than fifty leaf rust resistance (Lr) genes which can provide resistance against specific leaf rust pathotypes. One such gene Lr35, an adult plant resistance gene, has remained effective under Indian conditions. To utilize this gene in developing wheat genotypes using reported molecular marker, F2 population of the cross RL 5711 (Tc*/Lr35) / HUW 234 was generated for its validation. Chi square analysis showed Mendelian segregation for the marker as well as disease reaction in F2 population. Linkage distance between the marker and Lr35 gene was estimated as 4.2cM. Indian wheat genotypes showing adult plant resistance were screened using the marker. Since, all the genotypes under test were found devoid of Lr35 gene, it is advocated to utilize marker assisted incorporation of Lr35 gene in the Indian wheat improvement programme.
