Abstract

Aim: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity of Solanum trilobatum mediated selenium nanoparticles.

Materials and Methods: The plant extract was prepared by using 1g of Solanum trilobatum powder with 0.519 g of sodium selenite with 50 ml of distilled water. Then they obtained extract was kept in a laboratory shaker for the synthesis of selenium nanoparticles for a few hours. For every two hours, the colour change was observed and the readings were taken using a UV spectrometer.

Results and Discussion: The anti-inflammatory effect of selenium nanoparticles showed a higher percentage of protein denaturation inhibition at 50 µL. As the concentration increases the percentage of inhibition increases simultaneously. The anti-microbial activity of Solanum trilobatum mediated selenium nanoparticles showed potent inhibition against Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus sp and Candida albicans. Antimicrobial activity in our study exhibited higher zone of inhibition than standard against S. mutans and Lactobacillus. Antifungal activity in our study showed a zone of inhibition against Candida albicans almost similar to the standard used.

Conclusion: Nanoscience and nanotechnology have various promising applications due to the affectedly changed and excellent properties of materials at the nanoscale. The present study showed that Solanum trilobatum mediated SeNPs possess a great anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. So this present study might give knowledge and pave a path for creating newer drugs that could replace the standard in the future.
