Thermal engines designed to convert thermal energy to mechanical work through heat-work
interactions based on both heat addition and extraction, which entails the performance of mechanical
work by expansion of the thermal working fluid, and by heat-work interactions based on heat
extraction what entails the realization of mechanical work by contraction of the thermal work fluid
require devices that perform processes of heat-work conversion little or nothing conventional [P1-
P16]. Thus, this chapter describes two different characteristics from those used with conventional
heat-work conversion techniques:
- the realization of isochoric heat-work interactions while simultaneously changing the volume of
the acting-cylinder chambers.
- the realization of isobaric and isothermal heat-work interactions, for which the ability to modulate
the heat flow rate in real time on the thermal process considered by means of appropriate control
strategies is required. This requires hardware based devices such as actuator control valves,
sensors as well as control algorithms.
